Lanzado en 1981, Face Value transformó a Phil Collins, baterista de Genesis, en un fenómeno solista de alcance mundial. El álbum es una obra profundamente personal, escrita en torno a su divorcio de su primera esposa. En lugar de optar por el escapismo pop puro, Collins se volcó en la vulnerabilidad más cruda, fusionando con maestría elementos de soul, art-pop y R&B en una obra maestra personal y coherente. El disco es quizás más famoso por su revolucionaria producción, en particular por el sonido de batería con reverberación controlada que definió la estética sonora de los años 80. Esto se aprecia mejor en el tema central, «In the Air Tonight», que sigue siendo el redoble de batería más célebre de la historia del rock.
