If there are indeed only a handful of albums that marked their own times in the way that Kind of Blue did, there are even less which, 60 years later, continue to bear the same importance. This legendary LP is a crown jewel in the discography of Miles Davis, who tried all kinds of styles and never stopped reinventing himself from his earliest jobs with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie until his death in 1991. Backing him here are five musicians –John Coltrane on tenor sax, Julian “Cannonball” Adderley on alto sax, Bill Evans and Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – who got together to bring to life a new jazz conception that broke away from the one that had dominated the previous decade. The members of this group would soon enter the firmament of jazz legends. The trumpeter was able to blend their contrasts, John Coltrane’s fluid and burning breath, Bill Evans’ impressionist harmonies, in order to produce an album that is justly considered among the most precious in the history of recorded music.
