John Coltrane’s 1957 session in Hackensack, New Jersey produced all the material for the album Blue Train. It also marked the first time that he was given the opportunity to select his own sidemen for a date. He enlisted the support of trumpeter Lee Morgan, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. Asked in a 1960 radio interview which was his favorite of the albums he recorded up to that point, he was quick to reply: Blue Train. The album Lush Life has been added as a bonus.
